The Encyclopedia of Ukraine
Drawing on the Ukrainian-language encyclopedia edited by the late Prof. Volodymyr Kubijovyc, but also incorporating a large body of new materials, the Encyclopedia of Ukraine consists of five volumes, almost 4,000 pages and some 12,500 alphabetical entries. The Editor-in-Chief of Volumes I and II (which appeared in 1984 and 1988 respectively) was Volodymyr Kubijovyc. The concluding three volumes, of which Danylo Husar Struk was editor-in-chief, appeared in 1993. The publication subsidy of approximately one million dollars was provided by the Foundation. The encyclopedia has been widely hailed as the best single reference work on Ukraine and Ukrainians available today in English. It fills an urgent need long felt by scholars, diplomats, businesspersons, journalists, and the general public. It is also a rich source of information about their spiritual roots for Ukrainians in English-speaking countries and for their friends and relatives who do not know Ukrainian. Despite the fact that it is in English, the encyclopedia has attracted much attention in Ukraine and a number of institutions there have asked for a set. Thanks to support form its donors, the Foundation has been able to meet most of these requests. "[A] first-rate guide to the life and culture of Ukrainians both in Ukraine and elsewhere. The work examines an enormous body of material with patience and care.... To be noted, finally, is the remarkable balance it achieves in presenting both Western and Eastern views." _Slavic and East European Journal_. "In terms of its quality ... it compares favorably with _The Canadian Encyclopedia_ (2nd edition, 1988, 4 volumes).... [It] contains authoritative, accurate articles.... It is a reliable and objective refererence tool.... indispensable ... for any research institution in Slavic and Ukrainian studies." _Ethnic Forum_. "[A] major achievement of emigre scholarship and Canadian publishing.... an enormously impressive and important achievement that brings together a wealth of information.... the best work of reference on Ukraine in any language--one that will for many years remain the standard against which ideas, issues, and their interpretation are measured.... It reshapes the interpretive context, and by doing so it challenges readers to see the world from an anti-imperialist perspective." _Journal of Ukrainian Studies_. "[I]ndeed an impressive publication.... the most comprehensive and balanced work in the English language on Ukraine and Ukrainians in the diaspora.... a monumental publication ..." _Canadian Journal of History_. " [F]or the English speaker wanting to find out about Ukraine, there is preally no alternative.... a reliable source of information and a starting point for further study.... It supplies adequate, objective, accurate and, in general, balanced information about Ukraine.... It is an invaluable publication which offers the English-speaking reader a new insight into Ukraine, not only in isolation, but within the more general context of Eastern Europe." _The Slavonic and East European Review_. | ||
